If I were to come and work for you, is it clear when I could take my first vacation day? Can I take time to vote during working hours? What's your take on me using the company telephone for personal telephone calls? Do you have a limit for how much I can use the company internet and e-mail for my personal needs? Or let's say I am going through a rough time, can I get an advance on my next paycheck today?
In your mind, you may already know the answers to these questions. But, if I were to randomly ask your employees these same questions, how many of your employees do you think would give the same answer as you? If less than 100% would know these answers, then you need a Policy Manaual.
Most employees, I believe, want to be good employees. But to be successful, they need a clear understanding of what that means at your company. When you have a Policy Manual, as the owner, you define the parameters of what makes a good employee and what is acceptable. By setting the standard, you give each employee a chance to excel at being a good employee at your company. It's no longer fuzzy. It's no longer a guessing game.
In addition, by setting the standard, you now provide your management team with a valuable tool to consistently respond to and evaluate each employee and their actions. You can clearly state the consequences should a policy be violated. It's up to you to define the reactions an employee can expect where it's a verbal warning or serious enough to end in termination.
